Prospect Magazine - Britain's Intelligent Conversation

"At one east London station, a man was seen placing an envelope under a stone on the platform before leaping in front of a train. When they opened the envelope, they found a £20 note and a slip of paper saying, "Say sorry to the driver, this is to buy him a drink."

Hard to argue with the top choice - It demonstrates that the best covers reach down into the original and find something that no-one found before. On that basis, not all of the rest of these 50 qualify as great covers, rather than just very fun ones. My fave cover apart from those listed here (and excluding others that are very similar)? For nostalgia and a good laugh, the Goodies doing Wild Thing; for singalong fun, REM doing Love Is All Around unplugged. Oddly, in both cases the original was by the Troggs.

At the Odeon Swiss Cottage with Angela on a two for one offer. Very few people in the cinema.

Secretary (2002)

Saw this on DVD with Angela - it is well done, but the basic premise remains a rather masculine fanstasy, even though it is told from the woman's point of view. Great cast does a grand job.

Uh-oh. I spend 10 years reading reports from this sort of banking guy, and they are always looking to the sunny side. If one of them says its bad, its is bad.

The Decembrist: The right question about religion...maybe

"why it is that the current flourishing of religious faith has, for the first time ever, virtually no element of social justice? Why is its public phase so exclusively focused on issues of private and personal behavior?"

The New York Review of Books: Uncle Sam Is Watching You: "reports of the death of TIA were greatly exaggerated. Federal programs to collect and search vast computer databases for security purposes continue virtually unabated, inside and outside the Pentagon."

More on Ronald Hutton - all this thanks to Ray Girvan.

"For example, many Southern England towns, like Ottery St. Mary (inspiration for Ron Weasley's hometown Ottery St. Catchpole) roll flaming tar barrels through town. As this site notes, the standard explanation now is that it's an ancient rite done to cleanse the streets of evil spirits. In actual fact, it was initially an anti-Catholic demonstration invented for Guy Fawkes Day, but was continued because it was fun and looked cool. Naturally, nobody wants to say "Oh, yeah, we're basically remembering our forefathers' KKK-like actions", so they fall back on the pagan explanation."

Journal of Social History: The Stations of the Sun: A History of the Ritual Year in Britain. - book reviews

"Hutton is able to show that British calendar rites were anything but survivals. He relentlessly undermines the notion of pagan origins and pre-christian fertility worship, demonstrating that virtually no part of the annual cycle, except perhaps for mid-summer fires, can be traced with certainty back beyond the middle ages. He demonstrates that most of what pre-1970s folklorists mistook for pagan was actually Christian, and that the great proliferation of calendar rites in the period 1350-1530 took place in conjunction with the church, which had a vested interest in creating a popular culture that it could influence, if not wholly control."
