In the early 90s I was flying to America and a while into the flight became aware of that the queue of people down the aisle was not, in fact, for the toilets. It turned out that Joe Frazier was sitting two rows behind, in economy, on his way back after seeing a fight in London. Boxing didn't give him back what he gave it - he was a former world champ, and whoever invited him to London should have at least forked out for business class - but he spent the entire flight signing autographs and talking to people. I'm not picking on the Telegraph, but everyone has this story, and they all contain this bit: "The Chancellor will use an £805 million “dividend” from a Whitehall under-spend to pay for the tax break that will see an average family saving £72 a year."

There are about 25 million households in Britain, and since Council Tax is levied on homes, its fair to assume that in this story "families" = "households." But 25 million x £72 = £1.8 billion. Or conversely, £805/25 = £32. What am I missing?

So I think we have one of the following to choose from:

My maths or facts are wrong. Always possible, but in this case not so, I hope.
In some way families does not equal households. But since family is not clearly defined (my cousins are all part of my family, but we don't all live in the same house) and hence not counted, this would render the stats meaningless. It is fairly well established to use "family" as a synonym for household when writing this kind of story.
If the goverment are counting me and my sisters as one family to make the saving sound better then they really should be called out on it.
The saving really is in the region of £1.8 billion, and the government is funding it by both the £805 million saving and some other funds (or by borrowing). In which case this looks like an attempt to deceive the amount of "new" money the Government is willing to put to this voter friendly issue.
The government are using average to mean something other than the default assumption of "mean" and no journalist has thought to probe deeper. Some households own more than one home and so would benefit twice, but these are far from typical or average. "Average" does cover mean, mode and median, but in common conversation is means "mean." Where the difference is significant this should be explained, and if people expect to save £72 and wind up saving £32, I'd argue that's a significant difference.
1. A variation of the above: there are number behind the numbers that does make sense of this, but no journalist has spotted that 805/25 does not equal 72 and thought to ask.

I think 3 or 4 or a variant is the answer: and at the root this is shoddy journalism. There's a maths problem in plain sight and nobody seems to be asking about it. Or I'm missing something obvious again.

So, farewell REM. You've been a part of my life since I saw you playing Can't Get There from Here on The Tube, and I borrowed Neil's copy of Fables of The Recontruction - not the best album to try first, but it was enough for me. I remember The One I Love being played on Radio 1 at least four times in one day when I drove Sophie and a Land Rover full of her stuff down to Hornsey and back in a day. Green was the soundtrack of my transitional year at University in 1988/9, and of course Out Of Time was even more so in my last, wonderful year at Edinburgh.Craig, Neil, Michelle, Ed, Michael, Avi, Steve, Robert - so many people are there with me in those tracks.

If the band had split up after Bill Berry left, they would have left behind a near-perfect body of work. Instead we had three albums of a band struggling to find a voice and a direction - although still blessed with a way to produce at least one great single per album - and a tired sounding first official live album.

If they had split up at that point, we'd have said about time too, and tried to forget the recent stuff. Instead they took something to heart, worked with a new producer and turned out two late gems, and a fantastic live album.

Like a prize fighter who has been struggling, but then wins three successive fights by knockouts, REM can go out on a high. Not the peak they'd have left behind if they'd quit in 1997, but a late flurry of brilliance. Having rightfully reclaimed our attention, they are going on their own terms.

What's been interesting is that we've had no solo albums by any of the members, even during the long gaps in the later part of their career. Peter Buck seems willing to turn up and play with anyone who asks, Michael Stipe has been producing films, and Mike Mills presumably just spends his days being nice, but none have taken the lead on anything musically. This could be interesting.

The career overall speaks for itself. Thanks guys.

I'm mildly amused by the reaction to the WHO research on mobile phones, which may be roughly summarised as "OMG! Phones are going to kill us!"

And yet the WHO has parked cell phone use as "possibly carcinogenic" in humans - on the same level as petrol exhausts and safer than diesel exhausts (which are "probably" carcinogenic). But nobody looks at cars and thinks of them as a source of cancer, or that we should ban their use around children. Indeed, what's proven to be dangerous about mobile phones is their use whilst driving.

By the way: June 14 is world blood donor day. Find your nearest centre, open up and have a biscuit after. You'll feel better and someone else will live.

I think Phil Gyford has this right - its an large number when you drill into it. What numbers like this tend to mean is that the broadcast was carried on channels that have a reach totalling 2 billion. Its simply too early to have detailed figures from across the world. Also this 2 billion figure is essentially what was predicted beforehand - suspicious.

Another comparison: in 2009 the Sunday Times reported that the opening cermony for the Beijing Olympics was the most watched live TV event in human history with an audience of 984 million people watching at least some of it. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/olympics/article6256063.ece. That report dates from nearly a year after so that is a well researched number.

Apple tracking my every move? Sorta

There's a reasonable - and justified - amount of fuss about the revelation that GPS-enabled iOS devices running iOS4 and above (i.e. most iPhones and some iPads and latest touches) are tracking and storing users location data, with apparently no option to delete it. This is potentially a security nightmare. It all came to light with an OS X app that allows you to easily grab and see this data.

Some recent posts say this is all a fuss over nothing - the data has always been there, but with the upgrade to iOS 4 is became accesible to 3rd party developers for the first time. Others are concerend about other peope getting their hands in your movement data, either illegally or legally with a court order. These are proper concerns.

But having looked at my own data a couple of thoughts come to mind. First, the app makes a little animated movie of your movements based on the data, and its really cool.

The other, more significant thing, is that its not very accurate. The first image shows the data map of a trip I took to Blackpool last October. I went by train - a very precise, known route. Yet the map show me going all over the place - as far west as Wales, as far north as the Lake District.

The second image is a zoom in of the first, and shows the data in suspiciously horizontal lines (and less obvious vertical lines). It also shows me in lots of places I didn't go, including the Irish Sea at the mouth of the Mersey.

So either the data is not being collected accurately, not stored accurately or not processed accurately by the app. Oddly, the wide view seems to indicate the first option - inaccurate data collection. When it has wrong data, it is at least puts me in places that people go. So it has me going through Liverpool - which I didn't - but people who travel from London to the North West do sometimes go to Liverpool, so its almost as if the things has guessed based on crowd data.

But the zoomed in view suggests poor data - those lines say that it either didn't colled accurately (which is counter to my other experience of GPS data on the iPhone) or it "rounds off" to store it and so the data snaps to horizontal and vertical lines that are hundreds of metres apart. Or the app is rounding off when it pulls the data.

All of which makes this interesting, rather than deeply threatening. If I was on trial and part of the evidence was that my phone showed that I was in Blackpool at the time of the crime, I'd want my lawyer to point out that the same data shows me in a boat in the Mersey estuary as well as travelling from Euston to Preston via Wales.
