There was a war on, you know. They had to keep spirits up with light-hearted movie fare.

They had to ration melodies, acting talent and boy trebles, as well as bacon. But that boy was none other than my dad, and I'm very proud.

Continuing "Scotts in the movies week"

http://www.archive.org/details/MissLondonLtd. - yes, you can legally download this Val Guest-Arthur Askey non-classic. But if you don't, you'll miss your chance to see my dad singing a verse of "You too could have a lovely romance" with Anne Shelton. He's at the 1:30 mark for those of you allergic to Arthur Askey.

Family history in the movies: my grandfather sings, James Mason overacts

This is from Pandora and the Flying Dutchman - George Mountford Scott is the first singer you hear. It's beautiful to hear his voice - my gift to my Dad on fathers day.

YouTube and Twitter erode Facebook’s dominance of social

Now with added analysis of YouTube: this becomes more interesting all the time. The trick is whether or not this is a one off month. If this repeats for June then we have an issue.

Stuff like the repeated privacy issues (this month: face recognition) don't help. It would be interesting to see if there is a link between membership declines and news coverage of privacy "updates."

Relative risk

I'm mildly amused by the reaction to the WHO research on mobile phones, which may be roughly summarised as "OMG! Phones are going to kill us!"

And yet the WHO has parked cell phone use as "possibly carcinogenic" in humans - on the same level as petrol exhausts and safer than diesel exhausts (which are "probably" carcinogenic). But nobody looks at cars and thinks of them as a source of cancer, or that we should ban their use around children. Indeed, what's proven to be dangerous about mobile phones is their use whilst driving.

By the way: June 14 is world blood donor day. Find your nearest centre, open up and have a biscuit after. You'll feel better and someone else will live.
